Haleiwa
The historic town of Haleiwa originated in the late 1800s as a hotel named Hale'iwa, meaning house of the frigatebird. The area wasn't very popular before the hotel, but after the building went up, people were drawn to the area for its beauty and charm. It is now a bustling little town full of restaurants, shops, galleries, and amazing food trucks. The restaurant Haleiwa Joe's now stands where the hotel once stood, which is one of the most popular restaurants in town.
Here is our list of suggestions when visiting Haleiwa.
EAT
Haleiwa Joe’s- This is a staple restaurant for our family. We recommend the sizzling mushrooms, coconut shrimp, and the grilled shrimp.
Haleiwa Beach House- The views at sunset from the Beach House are breathtaking. We recommend going a little early to be sure and grab a table on the patio. It’s one of the nicer restaurants on the North shore and the food does not disappoint! We recommend the Tune Tartare and the Thai fried chicken. Don’t forget a Mai Tai!
Beet Box Cafe- Fully vegetarian restaurant offering amazing dishes with organic, locally sourced produce. Great option for the vegetarian or vegan in your family!
Banzai Sushi- Great sushi bar with traditional floor seating! There are tables available as well. Their menu offers a wide variety of cut rolls, hand rolls, bowls, etc. using local produce and fresh fish. Tons of vegetarian options too!
Wailua Bakery- This is a MUST when visiting Haleiwa. They bake fresh bread and treats daily. Their sandwiches are incredible and very filling. We also recommend grabbing a smoothie! Everything on the menu is mouthwatering. CASH ONLY
SHOP
The Growing Keiki- A fantastic, family owned children’s store offering goods from many local artists.
No. 808- Awesome selection of vintage Hawaiian knick knacks. They also offer clothing, houseware, and art. Great store to check out.
North Shore Marketplace- This is a newer developed area with some good shopping stores, shaved ice, coffee shop, and an art gallery by the famous Clark Little. Perfect for parking and strolling around to each store. (shown above)
Our recommendation for seeing all that Haleiwa has to offer is park at the beginning, near Haleiwa Joe's, and casually stroll the sidewalks to look at all the amazing local businesses.
